ReVision Theatre Seeks a Permanent Home
Raising Funds to Turn an Asbury Park Warehouse into a Professional Theatre Takes as Much Creativity as Producing Great Shows Community members Like YOU will make the difference We have located a perfect open floor plan (no pillars!) warehouse space for our new theatre located smack-dab in the preferred Asbury Park downtown area. The open space area has direct street access and is 40 ft. wide and 100 ft. deep with 30 ft. steel beam construction ceiling height which will allow us to provide: - 6 main-stage productions with a total yearly audience of over 12,000 - Internship opportunities for college students - opportunities for community members - Monthly reading series of new works in development - Workshop productions of two new plays or musicals - 4 youth theatre productions - 4 Cabaret productions showcasing young new composers - Theatre arts-in-education Classes for youth & adults - Use by other local arts groups and organizations The owner of the building has offered us a full 18 months free rent followed by an 8 year lease at less than 50% below market value making the deal extremely attractive, affordable and doable. So what’s the catch? The space is delivered RAW. As is. All of the electric, plumbing, seating and staging has to be installed, and paid for. The total cost comes to $400,000. So how does a theatre company raise that kind of cash? We approach it creatively, leaving no stone unturned. So far we have reached out to the City, the State and many private foundation funding sources. We believe that these sources will provide us with about $150,000 of our needed funds. Although our total budget for the entire transformation of the space into a full functioning theatre is $400,000, we’re use to doing more with less. As long as we have the basics in place and we’ve been approved by the city inspectors we can open and begin producing our shows. The theatre space itself will become a work in progress as audience members see a more and more ‘finished’ theatre as they attend show by show. This, of course, will never affect the quality that our audiences have come to expect from every one of our productions. One of the more unusual funding sources might come from Pepsi through their Pepsi Refresh Program. Pepsi will award more than $20 million in 2010 in the form of grants to projects that make a difference in six categories: Health, Arts & Culture, Food & Shelter, The Planet, Neighborhoods and Education. Each month submissions will be accepted until a total of 1000 ideas are received. The following month, Pepsi will present website visitors with the consumer-generated ideas and the winners will be determined through online voting. Grant levels include, 2 Grants at the $250,000 level; 10 Grants at the $50,000 level; 10 Grants at the $25,000 level; and 10 Grants at the $5,000 level. ReVision Theatre, at the suggestion of one of our board members, Andy Wheeler, was fortunate enough to be one of the first to submit their proposal for turning a warehouse space into a theatre at the $50,000 level. Although we need much more than that, this will, if awarded, at least pay for our new air conditioning and heating unit in the new space. Nopt bad since air conditioning and heat have been a luxury for us in the past when we’ve had to convert spaces temporarily into theatres. Actually even the bathrooms in our new space will be an added convenience since when our shows are presented at The Carousel House we’ve had to rent porta-potties for both the cast and audience to use! The remainder of the funds will be raised from private individual contributions from people LIKE YOU. Everyone is encouraged to visit the Pepsi Refresh website at and VOTE.
Please also pass the word and ask EVERONE you know to vote.
We’re also accepting direct contributions on our website at www.ReVisionTheatre.org or by calling our office at 732-455-3059.
But for now the show must go on. This summer The Who’s TOMMY will run from July 8-25 at The Carousel House on the boardwalk in Asbury Park. This electrifying rock opera is known world-wide and boasts music and lyrics by Pete Townshend, book by Pete Townshend and Des McAnuff, and additional music and lyrics by John Entwistle and Keith Moon. THE BIKINIS is the “World Premiere” of a new musical and will run from August 12-22 at The Carousel House on the boardwalk in Asbury Park. This beach party musical features your favorite summertime hits from the 60’s and 70’s including “It’s in his Kiss”, “Mambo Italiano”, and “These Boots Were Made for Walkin”, to name just a few. Written by Ray Roderick and James Hindman with musical arrangements by Joe Baker. THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW is what we hope will be the first show to be produced in the new space and will run from October 21-31. This exotic musical about a transsexual from Transylvania is ready to thrill you with its frothy, fun, and naughty moments. This is the boldest bash of them all, so sharpen those stilettos for the rockiest ride of your life! Book, music, and lyrics by Richard O’Brien.
