Open Caption Performance for the Hearing Impaired on Thursday, April 23 at 8 pm Inspired by the true stories of Current and former Latin Kings, Kingdom chronicles the journey of two kids from the barrio in a quest to belong - and the power struggle that tears the two friends apart. Andres and Juan are tired of being stepped on, abandoned, and poor. Juan is homeless, they’re both jobless, and no one will help them – so they decide to help themselves. Andres steals ecstasy from Hector and Danny, members of the drug-dealing gang the Sólidos, and gets into a confrontation with Marisa later that night. Marisa and her older brother Cano are leaders of an underground organization that purports to support young Latinos: the Almighty Latin King & Queen Nation. At Cano’s invitation, Andres and Juan join the Nation, and their lives immediately change for the better. Juan gets a loan from Cano and learns his dead father used to be a King. Andres decides to grow up, embrace God, and be a leader. Unbeknownst to Juan and Cano, he and Marisa become intimate and he joins her selling weed. When their community service for the Nation brings them into conflict with their old nemeses, the Sólidos, Andres and Juan now have the upper hand. One of the Sólidos, Hector, is so angered by their encounter, and by Andres’ perceived encroachment on their drug-dealing territory, that he shoots and kills the Kings’ leader, Cano. Andres tries to pull the Kings together after Cano’s death, and urges them to focus their energy on getting justice. Over Marisa’s objections and Juan’s doubts, Andres shoots and kills Hector. Then, in an effort to wrestle the leadership from Marisa and solidify his and Juan’s status in the Nation, Andres brings Juan with him to strike again. Rather than kill a Sólido and complete his own transformation into the monster he sees Andres becoming, Juan shoots himself. Though he feels heartbroken and guilty, Andres realizes he will not become a leader, nor will Juan be respected, if the Kings find out Juan killed himself. He tells the Nation that the Sólidos killed Juan, and urges attack. Marisa warns this cycle of revenge is a curse that will only lead to more death. Andres has the last word, though – he turns the Kings on Marisa, takes power, and rallies the Nation to war. At the VFW Theatre 701 Lake Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ 07712
